Weddings at Hotel Santa Caterina, on the cliffs of Amalfi

Hotel Santa Caterina is a Liberty-style villa from the late nineteenth century on the cliffs just outside Amalfi, with terraced gardens that drop towards the sea. We have photographed two weddings there: Judy and Stephen’s and the wedding of Julia and Martin, who came from Canada.

The villa, the gardens and the view of Amalfi

The hotel is a short walk from the centre of Amalfi but feels apart from it. Inside there are hand-painted majolica floors; outside, terraced gardens with lemon trees, olive and fig trees, jasmine and bougainvillea. From almost everywhere you see the town across the water.

For a reception the hotel offers a veranda and a dining room that look over Amalfi. Its restaurant, Glicine, has a Michelin star.

Judy and Stephen married on a terrace above the sea, under a canopy of cascading flowers. Julia and Martin chose one of the gardens, with white flowers hanging from above like a curtain. After the vows they walked back down the aisle through a shower of white petals.

Light on the cliffs

The hotel faces Amalfi, so the town is the backdrop wherever you stand: white houses stacked on the rock, the harbour, the coast beyond. Our style comes from cinema and this coast already looks like a film set: we frame the couple small against it or up close with the town soft behind.

Judy and Stephen had a quiet first look on a balcony over the sea before the ceremony. Julia and Martin had their portraits with the houses of Amalfi behind them, in the warm light of the late afternoon.

In the evening the lights come on along the coast and the sea turns dark blue. Judy and Stephen’s dinner started under strings of bulbs, with the mountains fading behind their guests.

Judy and Stephen at Hotel Santa Caterina

Judy and Stephen had an intimate wedding with their close friends and family. Judy wore a flowing gown with delicate lace; Stephen wore a classic tuxedo.

They said their vows on the terrace with the sound of the waves below, then walked back through their guests and the petals. Dinner was one long table under hanging flowers and candlelight, with flowers by Kuts Flowers. The evening ended with the cutting of the cake.

Their planner was Amalfi Soirée and the video was by Diego Perrini.

No. We live in Naples and travel is included anywhere in mainland Italy, the Amalfi Coast included.
