Borgo di Castelvecchio wedding photographers
Borgo di Castelvecchio is a medieval hamlet in the Val d’Orcia, with stone farmhouses, an ivy-covered tower and its own riding centre. We photographed Mallory and Nick’s wedding there: the ceremony on the hill, portraits with a horse in the harvested fields, dinner in the courtyard under the trees.

Castelvecchio is near Contignano, in the comune of Radicofani, in the south of the Val d’Orcia. The borgo’s records go back to 1279 and it stands along the old Via Francigena. Today it is a group of restored stone farmhouses with thirty-two bedrooms, three pools, a church and a riding centre, so a good part of your guest list can stay on site.
Mallory and Nick’s day used three parts of the borgo. Mallory got ready in one of the stone-walled rooms, Nick by the pool and then in a room with exposed wooden beams. The ceremony was outside on the hill, in front of a round stone tower completely covered in ivy, with pampas grass and red flowers along the aisle and the open valley behind. Dinner and dancing were in the farmhouse courtyard, between stone arches and under the trees.

There is very little shade in the Val d’Orcia. The fields around Castelvecchio are open and on a clear afternoon the sun is hard and bright: in Mallory and Nick’s ceremony photos the sky is a clean blue and during the rings the sun is already low and coming from behind them.
The best hour is the last one. As the sun drops, the harvested fields turn gold and the shadows stretch across the dirt tracks and that is when we took Mallory and Nick out with a horse from the borgo’s riding centre. After sunset the courtyard takes over: string lights in the trees, candles on the tables, the stone arches glowing warm against a deep blue sky.

Mallory and Nick came from Philadelphia with their family and friends. Their planner was Weddings in Tuscany, the flowers were by Chiara Sperti and the whole day had one palette: cream pampas grass and deep red roses, from Nick’s buttonhole to the ceremony aisle to the dinner tables.
Nick read the vows he had written by hand. Mallory covered her face with her hand when the tears came, her bridesmaids in burgundy beside her. They walked back down the aisle with the tower behind them and their guests clapping on both sides. At dinner there were toasts by candlelight and later the first dance and a full dance floor in the courtyard.
