Weddings at Villa Le Capanne, on the hills outside Volterra
Villa Le Capanne, also called Country Relais & Spa Le Capanne, is a hundred-year-old farmhouse in the countryside of Volterra, with open hills on every side. We have photographed weddings there: ceremonies at the top of the hill, dinners along the old stone walls and sunset portraits on the grass with the whole valley behind you.
The house and the hill
Le Capanne is a farmhouse estate near Volterra, about a hundred years old, with nine en-suite bedrooms: seven in the main house and two suites with their own entrance. The venue’s own company runs the catering and the wedding planning, so the kitchen, the bar and the timings all come from the same team.
Ceremonies are outdoors. In our photos from Le Capanne the arch stands on the grass at the top of the hill, with nothing behind it but the open, rolling land around Volterra; the venue also offers ceremonies among its olive groves. In our photos, dinner is at long tables along the stone wall of the house, under its arched doorways and a line of festoon bulbs.
Light on the hills of Volterra
The house looks over a wide sweep of hills, mostly fields and grass with few trees and there is very little between you and the sun. In the afternoon that means strong light and guests reaching for their fans. At the end of the day it means the sun goes down right over the hills in front of you.
We plan the portraits for that moment: a walk across the grass toward the view, with the sun low behind you. By the time everyone sits down, the last light has moved onto the stone walls of the house and turned them orange and after dark the bulbs and the candles take over.
