Weddings at La Pescaia Resort, in the Tuscan Maremma

La Pescaia is a nineteenth-century villa and farm in the Maremma, at the foot of the hills between Roccastrada and Castiglione della Pescaia, surrounded by more than six thousand olive trees. We photographed Hannah and Nick’s wedding there: a ceremony on the lawn, a walk in the gardens at golden hour and a long dinner under the lights.

The villa, the gardens and the old pools

The estate stands on the old road between Siena and Rome, in the province of Grosseto. Villa Tolomei, the manor house, has a past linked to the family of Pia Tolomei and the farm buildings around it were restored with great respect for what was there. There are 6,000 square metres of parks and gardens, a centuries-old cedar in the middle of the farmyard and a swimming pool made from the old “pescaia” pools.

Hannah and Nick married outdoors, on the lawn among tall cypresses and umbrella pines, with their guests seated close around them and a guitarist playing live. Later they came down the brick steps of the villa through a shower of petals, with their friends on both sides.

Guests can stay on the estate: the venue says the couple and 34 guests can sleep in the villa and the apartments next to it. La Pescaia also has its own organic flower farm, Dome Flowers. Hannah and Nick’s flowers were by Le Petit Jardin.

How the light works at La Pescaia

The gardens are full of tall trees, so in the afternoon the light on the lawn arrives broken: deep shade under the pines, bright patches in between. It is the kind of light we look for in films and we framed Hannah and Nick’s ceremony between the trunks, with the faces in soft shade.

Before sunset we took them for a walk through the gardens, into the low golden light, then back to their guests. After dark the estate changes completely: strings of bulbs light the long table in the trees, the pool reflects them and the stone wall behind the table turns warm.

Hannah and Nick at La Pescaia

The day started slowly, with Hannah’s dress hanging by a window in one of the resort’s rooms, in soft natural light. Her gown was simple with a touch of vintage; Nick wore a classic black suit with a white shirt and a dark tie.

For the ceremony they sat together under an arch of autumn-coloured flowers, listening to the guitarist, with their families and friends around them. It felt more like a gathering of close friends than a formal event.

In the evening everyone moved to one long table under the lights by the pool. There were toasts, speeches read under the trees and then dancing late into the night.
